Jim Payne's School of Funk
give the drummer some!
Drumming is baked into our DNA here at Boldly Fine, so when we get a chance to work with a fellow brother of funk it is always a fun project.
“School of Funk” owner and drummer Jim Payne has been gigging and teaching for decades. He’s performed with renowned artists like James Brown’s bandleader Maceo Parker (that discog… 😦 ) Teaching-wise, he’s on Berklee School of Music’s online faculty and published many books, which he sells in his e-commerce store.
This funky man needed an equally funky yet professionally polished site for his users to navigate his educational content, create informative blog posts, and sell his books through a simple e-commerce flow.
The world is learning online
Our client Jim Payne didn’t stop at selling books. He created a curriculum for students to study the art of playing funk music and teamed up with Boldly Fine to turn his “teacher notes” into a slick, modern site that his users love just as much as his educational content.
In doing so, our client was able to tap into two trends.
First, funk music is making a comeback (FINALLY) and is in high demand. Second, online learning has been booming for years, but now with COVID-19 changing everything about everything, online learning is becoming the norm for modern education.
Selling online courses is a great way to create passive income. Popular pricing models include one-time purchases as well as recurring subscriptions. The School of Funk offers both to cater to different types of consumers.
Affiliate Marketing
Our online course setup also includes setting up affiliate marketing on the back-end. Current and former students have the option to promote Jim Payne’s course on their social media channels and in their email blasts.
Different pricing models for the course each have their own commission, so it provides direct incentive for his happy customers to market his course by word of mouth in a scalable way. Affiliates can simply log in to a portal to get their own referral URL, track their earnings, and receive their commissions in a quick and painless way.
branding is everything
“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand”
—Paul Rand, designer of the IBM logo
We couldn’t agree more. Functionality is priority number one, but branding and thoughtful design differentiate you from the competition.
While we are typically minimalists by nature, we’ve created designs that range from minimal to brutalist, feminine to masculine, clean to catchy… and now, funky 😎 .
In this case, we didn’t have to start from scratch. Our client came to us with an existing website and a video that has that bold font you see used throughout the site. We kept what we liked, created the course logo, standardized the color palette, and exported artwork for profile pictures and cover photos on social media.
When you prioritize a coherent brand like this for your business, you earn visitors’ trust and imprint your brand in their minds to keep them coming back for more.
